Chapter Twenty-Seven
Reynolds
Mother cluckers. His parents coming totally nerved me out. This put a new spin on our relationship. I’d always loved his mom. I’d never been as close to his dad, only because he worked and I’d come over after school. Or we’d sneak around at night and pray we’d see neither of them.
“Sure, but if I do, will they jump to conclusions about us?”
“I certainly hope so.”
I gave him the side-eye and saw he was grinning. “Cut that out. This freaks me out a little.”
“It does?” he asked as he took a quick glance at me.
“Uh, yeah. What if something happens between us and I hate you again?”
He let out a huge laugh. “If that does, it’s not because of me. I’ve already given you my word and I intend to keep it.”
Why was I so unsure of him? My conscience screamed because you’re protecting your heart, you big dummy. Right. He’d made me forget. Wasn’t that something? I had despised the man.
“Wow,” I mumbled.
“What?”
“Hmm?”
“Why’d you say wow?”
“Oh, I uh, I was just thinking.”
“Yeah? What about?”
I studied his profile. A perfectly slanted nose, high cheekbones, full lips, all complemented by a square jaw that bore a slight scruff. I adored him with that scruff. Reaching over, I ruffled my fingers through his hair. It had grown from when I’d corrected his magnificent mullet and the sides were thicker and longer now.
“You have great hair. I’d never thought about it much until I became a stylist.”
“Good to know, Ren, but I have the feeling that’s not what you were thinking about.”
“No, it wasn’t. I was thinking how much I despised you.”
“Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed hearing that.”
“Pretty sure you missed the most important part.”
“Oh, what’s that?”
We sat at a traffic light, so he turned and his gaze skewered me. Gah, it was intense. “I said despised. Past tense.”
“Am I to understand you don’t anymore?”
“If I did, I wouldn’t be sitting in this car.”
“I need to know something. That first day on the beach when we saw each other, didn’t you recognize me?”
“No! I was hypnotized by your hair. I mentioned it to Sutton and we both drooled over it. You know how stylists are. And then you had to go and put a silly baseball hat on. So we forgot about you.”
The light turned green and we were off again, him paying close attention to the road. “I didn’t realize it was you, either. Then you ran screaming into the water and I thought something about you was familiar, but I pushed that thought away.”
“It was a wasp.”
“What?”
“A wasp started chasing me.”
“That’s right. You’re allergic.”
“Yep, so I headed straight for the water, got caught in the curl of two waves, lost my top and bottoms, and it was a disaster.”
“Gotta say, the view was phenomenal.”
“Shut up. I almost died that day.”
“I know. It was a close call.”
“You’re making fun of me.” Indignation laced my words.
“I am. I could tell how much danger you were in when you clung to those drink glasses in both hands.
